\r\n[Financial News] Police have launched an investigation after allegations emerged that a terror plot was being discussed against Jung Cheong-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, ahead of the June 3 local elections.
According to police on the 17th, the Seoul Yeongdeungpo Police Station received an investigation request from the Democratic Party of Korea and began looking into the alleged plot targeting Jung. Security protection measures for Jung will also be implemented.
Kang Jun-hyun, the party's chief spokesperson, held an emergency press conference that day and said there were reports of organized terror plotting against Jung, centered on social media group chats and other online spaces. The party had requested a police investigation and protection for Jung the previous day.
Kang stressed that repeated tips had been received about organized terror plotting in unidentified social media group chats, including messages such as "Let's kill Jung Cheong-rae" and "Recruiting an assassination team for Jung Cheong-rae."
The Korean National Police Agency has decided to move up its plan to provide security protection for candidates, which had originally been set to begin on the 21st, the official start date of the campaign period.
