Set to open in Korea on the 21st, 'Colony' follows survivors trapped inside a sealed building during an unidentified outbreak as they fight infected beings that evolve in unpredictable ways. It is Yeon Sang-ho's latest film after 'Train to Busan,' which set a benchmark for Korean zombie films.
At noon on the 17th, 'Colony' ranked first in advance ticket sales with 32.7% on the Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS). 'Michael,' which opened on the 13th, came in second with 24.5%.
'Colony' is drawing attention for introducing Yeon Sang-ho's new type of zombie. U.S. entertainment outlet TheWrap noted after the Cannes screening that the film "reimagines zombies as beings that can communicate with one another" and "work together like a team to generate power."
Yeon Sang-ho previously said through distributor Showbox Corporation that "the greatest fear in 'Colony' is how increasingly difficult it becomes to predict how the infected will change." Jeon Young, who oversaw the infected characters' movements, said, "The collaborative movements, in which the infected share thoughts with one another, are truly grotesque. It will be a scene unlike anything seen anywhere in the world."
IMAX screenings have been confirmed for 'Colony' to effectively showcase the powerful presence of a new species that will fill the screen.
Jonathan Fisher, chief content officer at IMAX, said, "'Colony' is the most immersive realization of bold, cinematic horror. IMAX is the ideal platform to elevate every moment, and through scale, intensity and impact, it will make 'Colony' an unforgettable experience."
The VFX and DI for 'Colony' were handled by Dexter Studio, which also worked on 'Parasite.' Through the organic integration of VFX and DI, the film minimizes visual inconsistency between scenes and delivers a unified cinematic experience.
Meanwhile, 'Colony' has been pre-sold to 124 countries.
