According to the National Election Commission (NEC) on the 16th, 513 candidates nationwide were elected without a vote after candidate registration for the June 3 local elections. The number of constituencies with no vote was tallied at 307, due to factors such as single-candidate races and a shortage of candidates.
By election category, the three local government head candidates elected unopposed were Kim Yi-gang, Mayor of Seo-gu, Gwangju; Kim Byeong-nae, Mayor of Nam-gu, Gwangju; and Im Byeong-taek, the mayoral candidate for Siheung, Gyeonggi. All three belong to the Democratic Party of Korea.
In Siheung-si, which is located in the Seoul metropolitan area and is seen as a key battleground in local elections, the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) failed to field a candidate because of recruitment difficulties.
Among local council races, 305 candidates in districts such as Jongno District, Seoul, and Dobong were elected without a vote. Another 97 proportional local council members, including those in Seongbuk District, Seoul, and Dobong, were also confirmed elected without voting. In addition, 108 metropolitan council members in districts such as Eunpyeong District, Seoul, and Gwanak District were elected unopposed, bringing the total number of local lawmakers elected without an election to 510.
