[Financial News] Wang Yi, a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and foreign minister, confirmed that Chinese President Xi Jinping will make a state visit to the United States this fall.
According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 15th, Wang made the remarks during a briefing in Beijing on the agenda discussions and agreements reached at the U.S.-China summit held on the 14th and 15th.
Wang said the two countries agreed to maintain close communication, and that Xi is scheduled to make a state visit to the United States this fall at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Wang said, "The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact through future meetings, phone calls and letters."
Trump formally invited Xi and his wife to visit the United States on Sept. 24 during a state banquet hosted by Xi at Beijing's Great Hall of the People the previous day.
Regarding the summit, Wang said, "The two countries have set 'constructive strategic stability relations' as the new positioning of bilateral ties," adding that it was "a historic meeting at a critical time in each country's development."
He also said that, on trade negotiations, the two sides agreed to expand bilateral trade under a framework of reciprocal tariff cuts.
He added that the two countries' economic and trade teams will continue implementing all the common understandings reached in earlier talks, agreed to establish a Trade and Investment Council, and addressed each other's concerns over access to agricultural markets.
On the Taiwan issue, he said he felt that the United States does not recognize Taiwan independence.
Wang said, "Through the talks, we felt that the U.S. side understands China's position, values our concerns, and, like the international community, does not recognize or accept Taiwan independence."
He stressed that "the Taiwan issue is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations, and if one part is touched, it affects the whole," adding that "if it is not handled properly, it will push the entire China-U.S. relationship into a very dangerous situation."
He also urged the United States to safeguard the stable development of China-U.S. relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait through concrete actions.
He also said they discussed the situation in the Middle East and the Ukraine issue.
Wang said, "President Xi explained China's consistent position and stressed that force cannot solve problems, and that dialogue is the only right path," adding that the Strait of Hormuz should be reopened and that nuclear talks between the United States and Iran should take place as soon as possible.
On the Russo-Ukrainian War, he said, "Both China and the United States hope this war ends as soon as possible," and added that they want to maintain communication and play a constructive role in finding a political solution to the crisis.
