\r\n[The Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung carried out a surprise partial reshuffle of deputy minister-level posts on the 15th.
At a briefing at the Chunchugwan Press Center, Senior Presidential Secretary for Public Relations and Communications Kyuyoun Lee said President Lee appointed current spokesperson Hyun Soo-yeop as first vice minister of health and welfare and Lee Jong-wook, current vice commissioner, as commissioner of the Korea Customs Service.
Regarding the newly appointed vice minister, Lee said, "She is a career civil servant who has served in key posts at the ministry, including director of population and child policy and director of childcare policy." He added, "As a working mother raising four children, she made major contributions to improving the treatment of childcare teachers and introducing extended childcare services at daycare centers. She is the right person to strengthen the social safety net across welfare and health."
About the new commissioner, he said, "He is a veteran bureaucrat who has held key posts at the customs service, including director of planning and coordination. He has uncovered large-scale illegal circumvention exports and jointly cracked down on large quantities of narcotics with the Thai government." He added, "He is the right person to steadily support our companies' trade and investment activities and to block customs practices that threaten public safety."
In particular, the reshuffle came before the first vice minister of health and welfare and the customs commissioner had served for a full year. On this, Lee said, "This is a personnel decision needed after about a year to help the administration move forward in a more constructive way." He added, "They made major contributions to laying the policy foundation in their respective fields, and I would like to express my gratitude for their hard work."
President Lee also appointed former Land Ministry planning and coordination chief Moon Sung-yo as commissioner of the Saemangeum Development and Investment Agency, filling the vacancy left when former commissioner Kim Eui-gyeom resigned to run in a by-election for the National Assembly. Former lawmaker Hong Mi-young was named chair of the National Commission for Sustainable Development. In addition, Kyung Hee University professor Baek Jong-woo was appointed vice chair of the National Life and Safety Committee, and Yonsei University professor Kim Ki-young was named chair of the National Library Committee.
