[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung on the 13th criticized some media outlets for reporting that remarks by Kim Yong-beom, Chief Presidential Secretary for Policy, about "excess profits in the AI industry" amounted to a review of a plan to distribute corporate excess profits to the public, calling the reports "malicious fake news."
In a post on X, Lee said, "Fake news for manipulating public opinion is unacceptable," and made the remarks.
Lee said, "What Kim Yong-beom actually said was a review of a plan to distribute to the public the national excess tax revenue generated from excess profits in the AI industry. Some media outlets edited that remark and spread malicious fake news claiming that Kim had called for reviewing a plan to distribute corporate excess profits to the public."
He then asked, "Why are they still publishing such malicious reports, even after Kim denied it and kindly explained that he was referring to a review of distributing excess tax revenue, and even after related reports were published?"
Lee stressed, "We must remember that political attacks or criticism can undermine democracy if they are not based on facts."
The report Lee shared dealt with the controversy surrounding Kim's remarks on distributing gains from AI. Kim's side reportedly explained that the remarks were not meant to suggest distributing corporate excess profits generated by the growth of the AI industry to the public. Rather, they meant that the government could consider returning to the public the additional tax revenue and other fiscal capacity created in the process.
