[The Financial News] Global pop star Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, claiming it used her photo without permission. In response, Samsung Electronics said, "The claim that we used the artist's image without authorization is not true."
According to News1 and others on the 12th, Samsung Electronics said in a statement, "We confirmed and used the image rights through a content provider partner," and added that this was the basis for its position.
Earlier, Lipa's side filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics on the 8th local time at the United States District Court for the Central District of California, alleging copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and violation of publicity rights after Samsung allegedly attached her image to TV packaging boxes and sold them without permission.
The damages sought by Lipa's side are reportedly more than $15 million, or about 2.2 billion won.
Samsung Electronics, which has used the image on the outside of TV packaging boxes in the United States market since last year, said it carried out the related marketing after receiving confirmation from a content provider partner that the image could be used.
However, when Lipa's side raised concerns in July last year, saying it had never agreed to the use of the image, Samsung Electronics immediately stopped producing the boxes and began replacement work, the company said.
A Samsung Electronics official said, "We have been in continuous discussions with Dua Lipa's side until recently," adding, "We will do our best to reach an amicable resolution."
