[Financial News] As the KOSPI Composite Index extended its sharp rally and broke above the 7,800 mark for the first time, the value of Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong's stock holdings also surpassed 50 trillion won for the first time.
According to the Korea CXO Research Institute and others on the 11th, the value of Lee's stock holdings was estimated at 51.6593 trillion won. He holds shares in seven stocks, including Samsung Electronics, Samsung C&T Corporation, Samsung Life Insurance, Samsung SDS, Samsung E&A, Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, and Samsung Electronics preferred shares.
Lee's stock assets first climbed into the 20 trillion won range on Oct. 10 last year, when they stood at 20.7178 trillion won. They then rose to 30.2523 trillion won on Jan. 21 this year and 40.5986 trillion won on Feb. 26, surpassing 40 trillion won.
Samsung Electronics was by far the biggest driver behind the move into the 50 trillion won range.
On June 4 last year, when the Lee Jae-myung administration took office, the value of Lee's Samsung Electronics shares, 97,414,196 shares, stood at 5.6305 trillion won. By that day, it had jumped nearly fivefold to 27.8117 trillion won.
Over the same period, Samsung Electronics' common share price rose from 57,800 won to 288,500 won, and the value of Lee's Samsung Electronics holdings increased by 393.9%. In other words, the rise in the stock price directly translated into a sharp increase in his stock wealth.
The combined stock wealth of the four members of the Samsung family, including Lee, has also entered the 100 trillion won range.
Hong Ra-hee, honorary chair of the Leeum Museum of Art, held stock assets worth 20.8359 trillion won, Lee Boo-jin, president of Hotel Shilla, held 20.123 trillion won, and Lee Seo-hyun, president of Samsung C&T Corporation, held 19.0002 trillion won. Together with Lee, the four were estimated to hold a combined 111.6184 trillion won in stock assets.
