[Financial News] Cheong Wa Dae drew a line, saying it did not summon the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Korea to protest the attack on HMM Namu. It also said there would be no change to its humanitarian aid plan for Iran.
A senior Cheong Wa Dae official said on the 11th, "The country behind the attack has not been identified, and the possibility of involvement by several countries is being examined," adding, "For that reason, there is no new review or change regarding any support for Iran."
The South Korean government had decided last month to provide $500,000 in humanitarian aid to Iran. However, the ship was attacked shortly after that decision was announced.
The senior official also addressed the previous day's visit by the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Korea to MOFA, amid speculation about Iran's possible involvement. "I understand that the format was not a summons," the official said. "It was a meeting to discuss the matter with the Iranian ambassador."
MOFA called Saeed Koozechi, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Republic of Korea, to its building on the 10th. Diplomats viewed the move as a summons. Koozechi, however, has denied that Iran attacked the Namu.Cheong Wa Dae also explained, "The investigation found that the Namu was not attacked while it was making any movement." It added, "The Namu was anchored. It had already moved slightly away from its original position and had remained stationary since April 30." The office stressed again that, because the ship had been stationary for several days, it could not be said to have violated any rules.
However, U.S. President Donald Trump had claimed that "a South Korean ship was sailing alone and got hit." Iran's state-run media also said the South Korean vessel became a target because it violated regulations.
