Kim Young-hoon, Minister of Employment and Labor (MOEL), speaks at the third Emergency Employment and Labor Situation Review Meeting held on the 13th of last month at the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office in Jung-gu, Seoul. Provided by MOEL.
\r\n[Financial News] As Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. labor and management enter the National Labor Relations Commission's post-arbitration procedure starting on the 11th, Minister Kim Young-hoon urged both sides to take part in mediation with a sense of social responsibility, saying, "I hope labor and management alike will engage in mediation in a way that lives up to the name 'Another Family, Samsung.'"
At a policy review meeting and emergency employment and labor situation review meeting that day, Kim welcomed the launch of the Central Labor Commission's post-arbitration process with the consent of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. labor and management, and made the remarks.
Kim said, "Just as Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. labor and management built a world-class company through technology, they must also create a new model for labor-management relations." He added, "I hope this case will serve as an opportunity for active social discussion on desirable corporate performance sharing and distribution, so that our labor relations can move beyond the pursuit of individual interests and build a relationship of mutual growth. The government will also provide support."
Kim also wrote on X, formerly Twitter, that "the hard-won post-arbitration process for Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. begins today," and added, "This is not an easy mediation, but the answer may already be close to us." He also attached hashtags including "Another Family," "Suppliers Are Family Too," "Transparent Management," and "A Shared Task for Labor and Management."
MOEL plans to actively support Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. labor and management so they can seek common ground through dialogue and compromise from a win-win perspective, taking into account the continued growth of the semiconductor industry, economic development, and the many stakeholders who contributed to the results, including suppliers, not just the two parties themselves.
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. labor and management will enter the post-arbitration process at the Central Labor Commission for two days from today through the 12th.
The Samsung Electronics labor union said it cannot accept negotiations if management does not take a more flexible stance on the union's demands, and that it will push ahead with the general strike scheduled for the 21st.
Before the post-arbitration process began, Choi Seung-ho, Chairperson of the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), told reporters that the union was still calling for the abolition and institutionalization of the cap on operating profit at 15 percent. "The union's position has not changed," he said. "The demands we are making in mediation are the same, and if the company shows a more flexible attitude, the union will also consider that."
He added, "If the company has no position on institutionalization today, we believe mediation will not be possible even today."
