[The Financial News] The Chinese government has officially announced U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to China. Trump is scheduled to stay in Beijing for three days and hold an official summit with Xi Jinping, President of China, on the 14th.
In a statement issued in the name of a spokesperson on the 11th, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China said Trump will make a state visit to Beijing from the 13th to the 15th at Xi’s invitation. The White House announced Trump’s China trip in March, but Beijing had not officially confirmed the visit until now.
This will be Trump’s first visit to China in about nine years, since November 2017 during his first term. He is expected to arrive in Beijing on the evening of the 13th and begin his official schedule the following day. His accommodation has not been officially confirmed, but as of the 7th, a five-star hotel in Liangmaqiao, Chaoyang District, Beijing, was not accepting full-room reservations for the period from the 12th to the 15th.
A welcome ceremony and a summit between the two leaders will be held on the morning of the 14th. In the afternoon, Trump and Xi will tour the Temple of Heaven, where emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties once prayed for a good harvest. A state dinner will be held in the evening.
Trump will meet Xi again on the 15th for a bilateral tea meeting and a working lunch before returning home. White House deputy press secretary Anna Kelly said Xi and his wife could make a reciprocal visit to Washington, D.C., later this year.
The two leaders are expected to discuss Taiwan, competition in Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the trade war during the meeting. Some foreign media outlets have also claimed that Trump may ask Xi to pressure Iran in an effort to bring the Iran War to an end.
