[Financial News] As the United States said it had neutralized two Iranian tankers in an effort to break through the maritime blockade on Iran and enter an Iranian port, Iran also said a "limited engagement" had taken place.
On the 8th (local time), foreign media reports said Tasnim News Agency, a semi-official Iranian outlet, stated, "There are reports that a limited engagement took place with U.S. forces in the Strait of Hormuz," adding, "Gunfire was heard in areas near the strait over the past two hours."
Earlier, the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM), which oversees the Middle East, said on X that U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets launched from the USS George H. W. Bush fired precision-guided munitions at the exhaust stacks of two tankers. The vessels were reportedly trying to break through the U.S. blockade and enter an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman.
The United States and Iran also exchanged military actions centered on the Strait of Hormuz the previous day. However, Iran described the clash with the U.S. as "limited" on this day, apparently seeking to manage any impact the engagement in the Strait of Hormuz could have on the ongoing ceasefire negotiations.
The U.S. also stressed that the clash with Iran in the Strait of Hormuz was defensive in nature. Visiting Rome, Italy, on the same day, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters that the previous day's armed clash with Iran was "separate and distinct from Operation Epic Fury," adding that the U.S. would respond "defensively."
