Donald Trump, the president of the United States, said on the 8th that Russia and Ukraine will observe a three-day ceasefire from the 9th to the 11th local time and exchange 1,000 prisoners during that period.
In a post on Truth Social that day, Trump wrote, "I am pleased to announce that Russia and Ukraine will have a three-day ceasefire."
He said all military activity would stop during the ceasefire and added, "This includes the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from both countries."
Trump said, "This request came directly from me," and added, "I am very grateful that President Vladimir Putin of Russia and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine agreed."
Trump said he hoped the move would lead to an end to the war between the two countries. He added, "Negotiations to end this major conflict, the largest since World War II, are under way, and we are getting a little closer every day."
Earlier, Russia declared a two-day ceasefire from the 8th to the 9th to mark Victory Day. It announced the unilateral ceasefire, saying it did not matter whether Ukraine agreed. On the 7th, Russia also unilaterally extended the period by one day without Ukraine's consent, declaring a ceasefire from the 8th to the 10th.
Ukraine also notified Russia, saying, "We declare a ceasefire regime starting at midnight going into the 5th to the 6th."
After both sides unilaterally declared ceasefires, they said they could not recognize them, and continued exchanging fire on the front lines through that day.
