[The Financial News] OpenAI will introduce ads for free ChatGPT users and those on lower-priced plans. The move is seen as part of the company’s effort to diversify revenue and offset the huge losses caused by its expanding AI infrastructure.
\r\nOn the 8th, OpenAI said its current ad pilot in the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand will soon expand to South Korea, the United Kingdom, Japan, Brazil, and Mexico.
\r\nThe measure targets adult users of the free and Go plans. OpenAI said, "We prioritize user experience and trust, with answer independence, privacy, and user control as core principles," adding, "Ads will be clearly separated from ChatGPT responses and will not affect the content of those responses."
Ads will be labeled as sponsored content, and users will also be able to manage ad preferences, including hiding ads and providing feedback. OpenAI said it is designing the system so that ads will not appear in conversation contexts involving sensitive or potentially regulated topics.
\r\nAds will not be shown to minors or to accounts on the Plus plan, which costs 29,000 won per month. Users on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, ChatGPT Enterprise, and ChatGPT Edu plans will not see ads.
\r\nAdvertisers will not have access to users' conversation content or personal information. They will only be able to view aggregated performance data, such as ad impressions and clicks.
\r\nOpenAI plans to provide in-product guidance to users who will be affected by the ads.
Dave Dugan, OpenAI Global Solutions Lead, said, "As companies show strong interest in how they connect with users in conversational, intent-based environments, we are expanding the regions for our ChatGPT ad pilot." He added, "OpenAI will put user experience and trust first and carefully manage the ad experience in each region."
