[Financial News] The Second Comprehensive Special Prosecutor Team, led by special prosecutor Kwon Chang-young, has found no grounds to indict Jeonbuk Governor Kim Gwan-young, who ran for governor of Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province as an independent after being expelled from the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), over allegations of aiding insurrection.
In a media notice on the 7th, the special counsel team said it had investigated allegations that Kim ordered the provincial government building to be closed during the December 3 Martial Law declaration, but concluded there was insufficient basis to hold him criminally liable and decided not to indict him. It also said the result had been sent to Jeollabuk-do.
Kim was accused of ordering a complete restriction on access to and closure of the provincial government building and eight city and county government offices in the province on Dec. 3, 2024. On Feb. 12, the Rebuilding Korea Party Jeonbuk Provincial Party filed a complaint with the special counsel team, accusing him of siding with insurrection and neglecting his duties.
The governor has consistently denied the allegations. When he appeared before the special counsel team on the 30th of last month, he drew a clear line, saying, "The government building was never closed, so I did not aid any insurrection."
The special counsel team questioned provincial officials and Kim, but reportedly found no evidence that could substantiate the allegations.
