\r\n[The Financial News] United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) said on the 8th (local time) that three U.S. Navy vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz came under attack by the Islamic Republic of Iran, and that it responded by striking Iranian military facilities.
USCENTCOM announced on social media that "U.S. Navy destroyers were subjected to a provocative attack by the Islamic Republic of Iran while transiting the Strait of Hormuz."
The United States Armed Forces explained that it "intercepted the Iranian attack and then struck the Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking U.S. forces" in self-defense.
The United States Armed Forces said no vessels were damaged in the attack.
It also stressed that "the United States does not seek escalation, but it is maintaining the necessary posture to protect U.S. forces."
The clash came as the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran have recently been continuing discussions on a ceasefire and an end to the war. Earlier, Iran claimed that the United States had violated the ceasefire by attacking tankers and civilian areas, while the United States said its actions were taken in self-defense.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key oil shipping route through which about 20% of the world's seaborne crude oil passes. The United States has recently been pushing Operation Sentinel, also known as Project Freedom, to help ensure the safe passage of civilian merchant ships, while the Islamic Republic of Iran has denounced it as a violation of sovereignty.
Although both sides are sending messages aimed at keeping the level of military confrontation in check, tensions around the strait appear to be rising again.
