The People Power Party appears to be making the so-called Special Prosecutor Act for Dismissal of Prosecutions, or the Special Prosecutor Act on Alleged Manipulated Investigations and Prosecutions under the Yoon Suk Yeol Administration, the biggest issue in the June 3 local elections. By framing the vote as a choice for or against the special prosecutor, the party is trying to rally conservatives and appeal to anti-Lee Jae Myung sentiment. The Reform Party is also calling for the special prosecutor plan to be scrapped and has launched an all-out anti-special-prosecutor campaign.
The People Power Party leadership held an on-site Supreme Council meeting in front of the Blue House on the 7th under the title, "Supreme Council Meeting Declaring the Special Prosecutor Act for Dismissal of Prosecutions on President Lee Jae Myung Null and Void." Jang Dong-hyuk said, "In short, they want to use a special prosecutor to take away the indictment from the judge and have Lee Jae Myung tear it up with his own hands," adding, "Dismissal of the prosecution is not just about erasing President Lee's crimes. It is the final tollgate on the road to Lee Jae Myung's dictatorship."
Jang added, "The moment 'criminal Lee Jae Myung' tears up the indictment with his own hands, unchecked dictatorship will begin in earnest," and claimed that "we will enter a world where no one can stop the collapse of South Korea."
The People Power Party has recently been mounting an all-out campaign to denounce the special prosecutor and attempts to dismiss prosecutions. On the 5th and 6th, candidates for metropolitan and provincial governor posts from the Seoul metropolitan area, Yeongnam region and other regions held a series of press conferences, calling the special prosecutor bill a "legislative coup." On the 7th, Lee Jang-woo, Mayor of Daejeon, Choi Min-ho, Mayor of Sejong City, and Kim Young-hwan, candidate for Governor of North Chungcheong Province, who are People Power Party candidates in the Chungcheong region, also gathered at the plaza in front of Sejong City Hall and urged, "Granting the special prosecutor the power to dismiss prosecutions is not only an affront to the principle that no one should judge their own case, but also an unconstitutional bill that undermines the foundation of the criminal justice system and destroys the separation of powers. Exercise your veto."
The Reform Party, which has declared solidarity with the People Power Party, also stepped up its anti-special-prosecutor offensive. Reform Party leader Lee Jun-seok said on the day, "The special prosecutor bill is designed so that the legislature can strip away cases that have already been indicted by the prosecution and are under review in court, and allow a special prosecutor appointed directly by the president to decide whether to maintain the prosecution in those cases," adding, "The ruling party of a democratic republic is pushing ahead with something even Chun Doo-hwan's military authoritarian regime never attempted."
