[The Financial News] Police have launched an investigation after a man in his 40s attacked his former girlfriend, a woman in her 20s, with a knife at a department store in downtown Daejeon Metropolitan City.
The Daejeon Dunsan Police Station said on the 30th that it had arrested a man in his 40s, identified as A, at the scene on attempted murder charges and was questioning him.
According to police, A is accused of swinging a knife at B, a woman in her 20s, and injuring her at around 5:55 p.m. that day at a store on the second basement floor of a department store in Dunsan-dong, Seo-gu, Daejeon Metropolitan City. Police, who responded after receiving a report, subdued A at the scene and arrested him in an emergency operation.
B, who suffered cuts to her arms and legs in the attack, was taken to a nearby hospital by paramedics and is receiving treatment. She is reportedly not in life-threatening condition. Although there were customers inside the department store at the time, A is believed to have targeted no one other than B.
Police investigations found that the two had worked at stores facing each other inside the same department store. During questioning, A is said to have stated, "I used to be in a romantic relationship with the victim." Police believe the attack occurred after the two argued at work, and that A used a knife that was nearby.
A police official said, "We are focusing on determining the exact motive and circumstances of the crime, including whether there was any personal grudge," adding, "Once the investigation is completed, we plan to seek an arrest warrant for A."
