U.S. President Donald Trump, who survived his third assassination scare in two years, said the assassination attempt did not appear to be linked to the Islamic Republic of Iran, but stressed that the incident would not stop the United States from winning the Iran War. At a press conference on the 25th local time, he compared himself to "Lincoln" and boasted about his achievements.
According to CNN and other foreign media outlets, the incident occurred around 8 p.m., less than 30 minutes after Trump attended a dinner hosted by the White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. Around 8:30 p.m., after the national anthem ended and dinner began, several gunshots were heard. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and Vice President JD Vance, among other key figures, took cover under tables before evacuating. Trump later said on social media that there were no casualties. CNN reported that an armed 31-year-old man, Cole Tomas Allen, exchanged gunfire with security personnel while trying to breach the screening area and was taken into custody.
Trump: "I Don't Think It Is Related to Iran"
About two hours after the incident, President Donald Trump held an emergency press conference and said he was safe. The assassination attempt against Trump was the third, following incidents in July and September 2024.
When asked whether the incident was connected to the Iran War, Trump said, "I don't think so." He also claimed that the attack "will not stop me from winning the war with Iran."
He said this was not the first shooting incident of its kind and added, "I ask all Americans to renew their commitment, with all their hearts, to resolving differences peacefully in light of tonight's incident." He emphasized the peaceful resolution of political conflict.
President Lee: "Political Violence Cannot Be Justified"
Trump stressed, "The targets of assassination attempts are very influential people. Look at the names of the big figures." He added, "In that sense, it is an honor. I have accomplished a lot. I changed this country." On the 26th, President Lee Jae Myung posted on X and conveyed his "deep condolences" to the American people, saying that "political violence is a grave threat that undermines the foundation of democracy and can never be justified for any reason." He also wrote that "the government of the Republic of Korea firmly opposes all forms of violence and extremism that undermine the values of democracy and the rule of law."
