[Financial News] As wedding banquet costs have risen sharply, increasing the burden on guests, announcer Eom Ji-in said she plans to give 50,000 won as a wedding gift for a coworker's marriage.
On the episode of KBS 2TV's "Boss in the Mirror" airing on the 26th, Eom announced, "I am planning to give 50,000 won as a wedding gift for announcer Nam Hyun-jong's wedding." Nam is Eom's direct junior and a close colleague she works with on the show.
She added, "He didn't come to my wedding," and argued that "50,000 won is the appropriate amount for a coworker at the company."
In response, broadcaster Park Myung-soo said, "These days, the basic banquet cost is 100,000 won, so at least 200,000 won should be given." Jun Hyun-moo also chimed in, saying, "The two are close, so 300,000 won would be appropriate."
However, Eom said, "I have never seen anyone in our company give 300,000 won," adding, "If you do, people call and ask whether it was entered incorrectly."
Meanwhile, in a previous episode, she also asked her senior Jun Hyun-moo for understanding, saying, "Even if I get married, I am a salaried worker, so I can't do much."
As inflation has pushed up wedding costs, debate over the appropriate amount for wedding gifts has continued.
According to the Korea Consumer Agency (KCA), the average total cost of wedding services as of February this year was 21.39 million won. By region, the average wedding cost was highest in Gangnam District at 34.66 million won, followed by areas outside Gangnam in Seoul at 28.92 million won and Gyeonggi Province at 19.09 million won. The Gyeongsang Region had the lowest average at 12.84 million won.
The median banquet cost was 11.4 million won, showing little change, but the per-person meal cost rose 1.7% to 59,000 won. By meal type, course meals were the most expensive at 119,000 won, followed by buffet-style meals at 62,000 won and set-table meals at 55,000 won.
