[Financial News] White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said that Steven Charles Witkoff, the United States' special envoy for the Middle East, and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump's eldest son-in-law, will travel to Islamabad, Pakistan, on the 25th local time for talks with the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI).
In an interview with Fox News on the 24th, Leavitt said the IRI had first requested an in-person meeting with the United States.
Leavitt said, "President of the United States Trump will hear the Iranian side through the U.S. negotiating team," adding, "We expect a productive conversation." She continued, "The ultimate goal of this military operation is to ensure that Iran never acquires nuclear weapons," and emphasized, "We have now entered a diplomatic phase to resolve this through an agreement."
She also explained that the so-called 'red line' set by President of the United States Trump means "a firm commitment that Iran will hand over enriched uranium and will not acquire, possess, develop, or manufacture nuclear weapons."
James David Vance, the Vice President of the United States who led the first round of talks, will not accompany this trip to Pakistan. Instead, he will remain in the United States and oversee the overall situation. However, he is said to be prepared to head to Pakistan immediately if needed, depending on how the negotiations proceed.
Meanwhile, Abbas Araghchi, the Iranian delegation's Minister of Foreign Affairs, is reportedly scheduled to arrive in Islamabad as early as today.
The United States and Iran previously held the first round of ceasefire talks in Islamabad on the 11th and 12th, but they ended without agreement. In the second round of talks now set to resume, attention is focused on whether the two sides can narrow their differences over key issues, including Iran's nuclear program and the normalization of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
