[The Financial News] People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok said on the 24th that the party's recent 15% approval rating was the result of a lack of unity. He also brushed aside calls for his resignation, saying he would "consider whether it would help the local elections."
At a press briefing at the National Assembly that day, Jang pointed to the 15% approval rating and argued, "One reason the People Power Party's support is low is that internal conflict is preventing our strength from coming together as one."
In the National Barometer Survey (NBS) released the previous day, support for the People Power Party fell to 15%, its lowest level since the Lee Jae Myung administration took office, while support for the Democratic Party reached a record high of 48%. Lee Jae Myung's positive rating for state affairs, which has been driving support for the Democratic Party, remained at a peak of 69% from late last month through this survey.
Jang said, "There are discussions about my future and even resignation in connection with the approval rating." He added, "There are 40 days left until the June local elections. I will think carefully about whether stepping down at this point would fulfill my responsibility as party leader and whether it would truly help us win the election."
The cited survey was conducted by Embrain Public, Kstat Research, Korea Research International and Hankook Research from the 20th to the 22nd through telephone interviews with 1,005 people nationwide, using randomly selected virtual numbers from three telecom carriers. The response rate was 17.7%, and the margin of error was plus or minus 3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
