[Financial News, Yeongwol = Reporter Kim Gi-seop] Yeongwol County will recreate the life of Danjong of Joseon, the sixth king of the dynasty, through a multi-layered historical and cultural program at the 59th Danjong Culture Festival, which honors his spirit through exile, royal marriage rites, and a royal funeral.
According to Yeongwol County on the 24th, this year's festival was designed around a narrative that goes beyond Danjong of Joseon’s tragic life and reflects the historical value of Yeongwol, following the surge in public interest sparked by the film 'The King's Warden.' On the opening day, the festival will debut the 'Cheongnyeongpo Exile Event,' which depicts Danjong of Joseon arriving at his place of exile by boat. It will also feature the Queen Jeongsun selection contest and an opening concert. Director Jang Hang-jun, who directed the film, is also scheduled to attend a special lecture and the opening ceremony to engage with the audience.
On the 25th, the festival will present 'The Royal Marriage Rite of Danjong of Joseon and Queen Jeongsun,' based on historical records, as well as 'Danjong's Royal Funeral,' a reenactment of Joseon-era royal funeral procedures. The funeral procession from Gwanpungheon to Jangneung is a symbolic ritual that pays royal honors to Danjong of Joseon, who was never given a royal funeral during his lifetime. In addition, hands-on events for families will include the 'Kkaebinoriteo Danjong Civil Service Exam' and 'Danjong's Gourmet Festival,' a palace cuisine competition.
On the final day, the 26th, Gangwon State's intangible cultural heritage, the 'Yeongwol Arrowroot Tug-of-War' and the 'Chikjul Parade,' will bring the festival to a close. Actor Park Ji-hwan, who played the Yeongwol County governor in the film, will join the event and create a space for harmony among residents and tourists.
Ahn Baek-woon, head of the Culture and Tourism Division, said, "This year's Danjong Culture Festival has been prepared so visitors can experience Danjong of Joseon’s story more deeply and richly amid the growing interest sparked by the film." He added, "I hope these meaningful programs will give many people a chance to rediscover the history of Danjong of Joseon and the value of Yeongwol."
