[The Financial News, New York City = Reporter Lee Byung-chul]Donald John Trump, President of the United States, dismissed the possibility of using nuclear weapons in connection with military conflict with Iran. He had expected a sharp selloff in financial markets from the war's fallout, but said the actual impact was limited, underscoring the legitimacy of his policy.
Speaking with reporters at the White House on the 23rd local time, Donald Trump was asked whether he would consider using nuclear weapons against Iran and said, "Why would I use nuclear weapons when I have already wiped them out?"
Earlier this month, he had intensified military pressure by warning that Iran "could be eliminated overnight," but he drew a line when it came to the actual use of nuclear weapons.
Donald Trump also said the war's impact on financial markets was not as severe as he had initially expected.
He said, "I thought the stock market could fall 20% to 25%, and I thought oil prices could rise to $200 a barrel." He added, "We had to do what was right for the country and the world, and we could not let Iran have nuclear weapons."
Market reactions were relatively limited. The S&P 500 Index fell just 0.4% from the previous day, while Brent Crude Oil, the global benchmark, traded at around $106 a barrel after rising about 4%.
Donald Trump also said oil prices were proving more stable than expected. He said, "I thought oil would rise to $200, but it is at a completely different level now."
