About 40,000 union members, according to police and union estimates, gathered on the 23rd at a struggle resolution rally held in front of Samsung Electronics' Pyeongtaek Campus in Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi Province.
The union strongly protested the breakdown of negotiations with management that had continued since late last year and called for a fair compensation system.
It demanded performance bonuses equal to 15% of the company's operating profit and the abolition of the bonus cap, warning that if the demands were not accepted, it would launch a general strike from May 21 to June 7.
After Samsung Electronics released its preliminary first-quarter results, securities firms projected annual operating profit at 30 trillion won, meaning the union's bonus demand could reach as much as 4.5 trillion won.
Union chairman Choi Seung-ho said, "We negotiated in good faith for four months, but management is trying to get by with one-time compensation," adding, "We will not stop fighting until our demands are met, and if no agreement is reached with management, we will go on a general strike starting on the 21st of next month."
In particular, the rally featured blatant criticism and mocking performances aimed at management. On one side of the venue, a banner printed with photos of Chairman Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman Jun Young-hyun, and President Tae-Moon Roh was displayed, and photos of the executives' faces were also placed on the floor of the rally site.

The photos were labeled with mocking nicknames such as "Jjajjajyong," "Jeon Sihwang," and "No Ttaemoon," and union members expressed their anger by stepping on them.
In another corner, organizers even encouraged people to throw objects at a banner printed with the executives' faces, under the slogan, "Take it out here and leave it." A black punching bag with the executives' faces attached was also placed there.
Meanwhile, a counter-rally by shareholders opposing the union's demands was also held. According to News1, Min Kyung-kwon, head of the Korea Shareholder Action Headquarters, strongly criticized the union from across from the Pyeongtaek Campus, saying, "Demanding unlimited profits is no different from being a predatory debtor."
Min said, "We can no longer stand by while they threaten to shut down a factory that belongs to 5 million shareholders," and added, "Halting a semiconductor line is a critical matter that requires astronomical costs and time."
