[Financial News] Türkiye has signaled that it will actively push to resume talks between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine in an effort to end the five-year war.
Ukraine has asked Türkiye to host the talks.
On the 22nd, local time, Anadolu Agency and other foreign media reported that Erdoğan met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who was visiting Ankara, and said, "Türkiye is doing everything it can to resume negotiations, including a summit-level meeting, so that the war can end in peace."
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Türkiye has maintained friendly ties with both sides despite being a NATO member, and has positioned itself as a mediator.
Erdoğan also told Rutte that transatlantic ties remain important, but added, "We expect NATO allies in Europe to share more responsibility for security."
On the same day, Erdoğan held a phone call with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and said Türkiye is working to build peace in Ukraine.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Türkiye had been asked to host a summit between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia.
He said the request had also been made to other capitals, including Türkiye, and added that Ukraine is ready to accept a venue other than Russia or the Republic of Belarus for a meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and President Vladimir Putin.
Foreign media have reported that the two sides remain far apart on the possibility of a Ukraine-Russia summit.
Citing Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, TASS reported that the only purpose of any meeting between the two leaders would be to reach a final agreement to end the war.
Peskov said, "President Putin is always ready to meet in Moscow," and stressed that the question is "why they should meet."
