[The Financial News] Google has belatedly fixed an error after it became known that Gyeollyeolbiryudo, one of South Korea's West Sea territorial baseline islands in Taean County, South Chungcheong Province, had been incorrectly labeled as "Gongnyeolbi Islet."
The office of Sung Il-jong of the People Power Party, whose district includes Seosan and Taean County in South Chungcheong Province, said on the 22nd that Google Korea had worked with its U.S. headquarters and others to correct the labeling error the previous day.
The move appears to have come after Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women's University pointed out the error on his social networking service (SNS) on the 16th.
Seo said, "When you search for 'Gyeollyeolbiryudo,' which is often called the Dokdo of South Korea's West Sea, Google incorrectly labels it as 'Gongnyeolbi Islet.'" He added, "After checking reports from internet users, we found that the same label appears not only in Google Search but also in the map service."
The same error was also found on Google Maps.

After the issue became known, Sung reportedly called Google Korea officials to the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea and demanded an immediate correction.
Sung said, "I will continue to take the lead in promoting and protecting Gyeollyeolbiryudo, the Dokdo of the West Sea."
Gyeollyeolbiryudo is an island in Taean County and one of the baseline islands used to determine South Korea's territorial waters. It is also regarded as a strategic outpost important for protecting maritime sovereignty and fishery resources.
In particular, it was formed by submarine volcanic activity 70 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period, preserving its ancient natural environment, but it had in fact been left in a blind spot of management.
In response, Taean County designated and proclaimed July 4, 2024, as Gyeollyeolbiryudo Day and installed a monument on Bukgyeongnyeolbido to mark the occasion.
