[The Financial News] President of the United States Donald Trump publicly demanded that Iran release eight Iranian women who are facing the death penalty.
On the 21st local time, Trump posted an image of the eight women on his social media platform Truth Social.
In the post, Trump said, "Iran is set to hang eight women," and added, "I would greatly appreciate it if Iran's leaders, who will soon hold talks with my delegation, would release these women."
He continued, "I am sure they will respect such a move from you. Please do not harm them! This would be a great start to our negotiations!!!"
Trump's remarks appear aimed at highlighting Iran's human rights issues on the international stage ahead of a second round of ceasefire talks scheduled to take place in Islamabad, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, while also seeking an advantage in the negotiations.
Iran, however, immediately pushed back against Trump's claims.
The Judiciary of Iran, through its official outlet Mizan Online, criticized Trump, saying he had once again been misled by fake news, and dismissed the claim by stating that "there is no possibility whatsoever that the death penalty will be carried out" against the women.
It added that some of them had already been released, and that even if the others were convicted, the charges would not be serious enough to warrant execution.
