[The Financial News] A man in his 60s, who worked diligently for nearly 30 years as the family breadwinner, has been reported to have given three people new life in his final act before passing away.
According to the Korea Organ Donation Agency on the 21st, Kim Ki-woong, 67, donated his liver and both kidneys after being declared brain dead at Korea University Guro Hospital on January 10 this year.
He collapsed at work on January 8 after losing consciousness and was taken to the hospital, but his condition worsened and he was later declared brain dead.
It was later revealed that on the day he collapsed, his only daughter was staying at a postpartum care center after giving birth to her second child, adding to the sorrow.
His daughter rushed to the hospital after receiving a call from her mother, but she never got to see her father wake up. He had even gotten vaccinated in advance so he could meet his second grandchild and had been waiting for his daughter to finish recovering, but sadly he passed away without ever holding the baby.
According to the bereaved family, he and his wife had already applied to refuse life-sustaining treatment because he did not want to burden his only daughter.
His daughter said she decided to honor his organ donation because "my father always liked helping others," adding that she was certain he would have said, "You did well. If you're going to go, it's even better to do something good on your way out."
He was known to have worked faithfully throughout his life and fulfilled his role as the family head. He was also deeply caring toward his only daughter. On his way home from work, he would often stop by with bread and fruit that his daughter and first grandchild liked.
His daughter said, "Now that I feel the emptiness left by my father, I want to live kindly like him." She added, "When we meet again far in the future, let us smile and greet each other, saying that we were truly happy in our own places. Thank you, and I love you."
