[The Financial News] As public interest in Neukgu, the wolf that escaped from Daejeon O-World and was later captured, continues to surge, requests have been pouring in for the zoo to share videos so people can check on its condition.
In response, Daejeon O-World released a video on its official social networking service (SNS) on the 20th showing Neukgu eating in an isolation room. In the footage, Neukgu keeps a close eye on its surroundings while eating the food provided, remaining visibly alert.
In particular, it stands out for repeatedly looking around with its tail tightly tucked between its hind legs. The behavior appears to reflect lingering stress from a difficult life in the wild. Neukgu escaped from O-World on the 8th and was captured at around 12:15 a.m. on the 17th after being hit with a tranquilizer dart.
Concerns had been raised about its health as the search dragged on, but now that it has been safely captured, it is reportedly showing no major problems. Its appetite is also steadily increasing. According to O-World, the beef and ground raw chicken fed to the animal on the afternoon of the 20th totaled 1.16 kg, about 180 g more than the previous day.
Meanwhile, O-World continues to update the public on Neukgu's condition through its official website and SNS. A zoo official said, "We are focusing on intensive care with Neukgu's recovery as our top priority," adding, "As its appetite continues to improve, we ask for your support so it can regain its health soon."
Comments on SNS and online communities have continued to call for the zoo to regularly upload YouTube videos of Neukgu's meals and daily life, saying they want to see its healthy condition directly through video, not just photos. Some fans are even hoping for a dedicated vlog or live video updates. Against this backdrop, some observers say Neukgu could emerge as a star animal like "Fu Bao," the panda that sparked a craze at Everland, and even be dubbed "Neukbao."
As news spread that Neukgu is in stable condition, attention is now turning to when O-World will reopen. The zoo suspended operations after the wolf's escape.
O-World said, "We are currently prioritizing safety inspections, facility repairs, and Neukgu's recovery," adding, "The reopening schedule for O-World has not yet been decided." Since a large crowd is expected once it reopens, the zoo is likely to resume operations only after making sufficient preparations.
