The White House said on the 20th (local time) that Chavez-DeRemer would step down. She had been under fire over allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a subordinate and accusations of abuse of power, including drinking on the job.
With this resignation, Chavez-DeRemer became the third Cabinet member to leave the Trump administration. Earlier, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was dismissed in March, and Attorney General Pam Bondi also stepped down earlier this month.
The personnel announcement was made through White House aides rather than President Donald Trump himself. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said, "Chavez-DeRemer is leaving the administration to move to the private sector."
Keith Sonderling, the deputy labor secretary, will serve as acting secretary.
Chavez-DeRemer had been the subject of multiple investigations since January. Recent reports said the Labor Department inspector general is investigating whether the secretary, her close aides and family members repeatedly sent personal messages to younger employees.
It was also reported that her husband and father exchanged text messages with young female employees.
