[Financial News] At least six people were killed and more than 14 others were injured on the 18th (local time) after a mass shooting and hostage standoff in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The suspect, who was from Russia, was shot dead by police at the scene.
According to foreign media outlets including the Ukrainian newspaper Kyiv Post, a man opened fire on people in the street in Kyiv's Holosiivskyi district before taking refuge in a supermarket, where he held people hostage and faced off with police.
Authorities tried to negotiate for the hostages' release, but the man refused to communicate and fired at police. Special police units then carried out an arrest operation and killed the suspect.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X (formerly Twitter) that he had received a report from Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko that the gunman who fired at civilians had been killed. He added, "Five people were killed, and 10 are receiving hospital treatment for injuries."
He said, "We rescued four hostages," and added, "So far, 14 people have been reported injured, and the number appears likely to rise." One of the injured is a 12-year-old boy, he said.
Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko said the man was a 58-year-old from Moscow, Russia. He also said a fire broke out at a Kyiv apartment registered as the man's address.
President Zelenskyy added, "A swift investigation is expected, and the police and the security service are cooperating." He also said he had instructed the interior minister and the police chief to release all verified information to the public.
