[Financial News] Anthropic PBC, which has entered into a lawsuit after clashing with the U.S. administration over the scope of AI use, met with the White House.
According to foreign media including The New York Times (NYT), Anthropic PBC CEO Dario Amodei visited the White House on the 17th local time and met with White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and finance minister Scott Bessent.
In a statement after the meeting, the White House said, "We discussed not only opportunities for cooperation, but also joint approaches and plans to address the challenges posed by the spread of technology," adding that it was "productive and constructive."
Anthropic PBC also said, "The two sides discussed how they could work together on key shared priorities, including cybersecurity, maintaining U.S. leadership in AI, and AI safety," and described the meeting as "productive."
It was reported that the meeting also included cybersecurity discussions about Claude Mythos, the AI model Anthropic PBC recently rolled out first to major companies and institutions.
The meeting drew attention because it came as the two sides are locked in a legal dispute. Analysts say the main factor may have been growing concerns over AI-related security risks, such as hacking, after Mythos demonstrated expert-level software vulnerability detection.
Earlier, Gregory Babasi, CIO at the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB), sent an email to federal agencies saying that a plan was being prepared to allow government agencies to use the Mythos model.
Not only the Ministry of Finance but also the United States Department of State (DoS) requested briefings and access to Mythos. Some observers say more U.S. government agencies may be able to use Mythos in the future. It was also reported that some U.S. intelligence agencies and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) under the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are already running pilot tests of Mythos.
U.S. media outlets said the White House-Anthropic PBC meeting could be the first step toward a settlement in the ongoing court battle.
Claude was originally an AI model used by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) for classified work, but tensions arose after Anthropic PBC held to its principle that AI should not be used for mass surveillance in the United States or for autonomous lethal weapons without human oversight. After the DoD designated Anthropic PBC as a "supply chain risk" company and President Donald Trump issued guidance barring the use of Anthropic PBC products across all government agencies, Anthropic PBC pushed back and filed a lawsuit.
