[The Financial News] Oh Se-hoon, the incumbent Seoul Metropolitan City Mayor and People Power Party (PPP) candidate for Seoul mayor, was selected on the 18th as the party's final candidate for the June 3 local elections. Oh will face Jung Won-oh, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate for Seoul mayor, in the main election.
Park Duk-hyum, head of the nomination management committee, said at the party's Yeouido headquarters in Seoul on the day that "the results of the intra-party primary have decided Oh as the PPP candidate for Seoul mayor."
The PPP's Seoul mayoral primary was held as a three-way race against lawmaker Park Soo-min and former lawmaker Yun Hee-suk. Rankings were determined based on a combined score of 50% from votes by responsible party delegates and 50% from a public opinion poll conducted over two days, on the 16th and 17th. Under party rules, the rankings and vote shares are not disclosed.
Oh is now seeking an unprecedented fifth term as Seoul mayor in the era of direct local elections, backed by the advantage of incumbency. However, with Jung's approval ratings rising sharply, the Seoul mayoral race is expected to become a fierce battleground. Both parties' leaderships are likely to pour all their efforts into defending and winning Seoul during the campaign period, viewing the city as a strategic stronghold.
