[The Financial News] WEBTOON’s legendary IP "Yumi's Cells," which has surpassed an astonishing 3.5 billion cumulative views, continues to show remarkable staying power even after its serialization ended. Following the recently released drama Season 3, it is now set to expand further this summer with a musical stage adaptation, continuing the dazzling growth of its "cell universe."
Lee Dong-geon’s "Yumi's Cells," which began serialization in 2015 and came to a grand close in November 2020, is a psychological romance that explores the love life and growth of its heroine Yumi through the perspective of the "cells" in her head.
The cells, which personify emotions, impulses and appetite, brought laughter and empathy to readers. In particular, the concept of the powerful "Prime Cell" and the ensemble of distinctive cells such as reason, emotion and hunger were praised for brilliantly visualizing the complex inner psychology of modern people, helping drive the record-breaking 3.5 billion views worldwide.
Even after the series ended, the work continued its phenomenon through adaptations into animation and drama, and it is now enjoying another peak. On the 13th, the long-awaited drama "Yumi's Cells Season 3" was released on TVING, immediately drawing the attention of viewers eager for new episodes from the cells.
The story does not stop there. In June, it will also take the stage as a musical for the first time. "Yumi's Cells the Musical," which will run from June 30 to August 23 at CJ Towol Theater, is set to vividly recreate Yumi’s everyday life and romance on stage. Tiffany Young and Kim Ye-won have been cast in dual roles as Yumi, raising expectations for how the talented performers will interpret the character’s charm.
Both the drama and the musical involve Studio N, a subsidiary of WEBTOON, in production, faithfully carrying over the spirit of the original work. It stands as a model case of OSMU, showing how a powerful webtoon source can expand into visual media and offline performing arts.
Just as the life of an ordinary office worker named Yumi became everyone’s story, the cheerful rebellion of the cells on stage is ready to awaken audiences’ "love cells" once again this summer.
