On the 16th local time, President Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social, "I just had a very good conversation with President Joseph Aoun of Lebanon and Bibi (Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel)," adding, "The two countries have agreed to a formal 10-day cease-fire."
He indicated the cease-fire would take effect immediately, specifying the start time as "5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time."
Trump went on in a follow-up post, saying, "For the first time since 1983, I will invite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Joseph Aoun to the White House for meaningful talks between the two countries," and stressed, "Both sides want peace, and I believe it will come quickly."
Trump in particular sought to highlight the agreement as a personal diplomatic achievement. "It has been my honor to have resolved nine wars around the world," he claimed, adding, "This will be the tenth."
He also stated, "I have directed Vice President James David Vance and Secretary of State Marco Antonio Rubio, together with Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, to work with Israel and Lebanon to achieve lasting peace," signaling follow-up diplomatic and military measures.
