On the 13th (local time), President Trump stated on the social media platform Truth Social, "If Iran's fast attack boats come even slightly close to our blockade line, they will be eliminated immediately," signaling a hard-line response.
He added in particular, "Even while attacking Iran, we did not strike the 'fast attack boats,' but there will be no exceptions if they threaten the blockade." This effectively means that any approach by sea will be treated as a military provocation.
His remarks came shortly after the United States decided to begin enforcing a maritime blockade on ships traveling to and from Iran starting at 10 a.m. on the 13th, U.S. Eastern Time. As the blockade is reported to cover all Iranian ports, there is growing concern that Iran's maritime logistics as a whole could suffer serious disruption.
President Trump also spelled out how the United States would respond. He said, "We will handle this in the same way we deal with maritime drug-smuggling vessels," and added, "It will be a swift and powerful operation." In recent months, the United States has carried out dozens of military operations against suspected drug-running ships in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, leaving at least 110 people dead.
Military experts note that Iran still has the ability to employ asymmetric capabilities. Former Royal Navy commander Tom Sharp analyzed, "Iran's regular navy has been significantly weakened, but the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) retains a range of assets, including fast attack boats, small submarines, naval mines, and jet skis loaded with explosives."
