[Financial News] Hollywood actor Lucy Liu has revealed that she once underwent surgery after being misdiagnosed with cancer. After experiencing a reversal of a diagnosis that had been made without additional testing, she has been actively stressing the importance of regular screenings and getting second opinions.
According to a report by U.S. outlet People magazine on the 11th (local time), Hollywood actor Lucy Liu discovered a lump in her breast in the 1990s and went to the hospital. The doctor at the time diagnosed her with cancer based only on a physical examination, without conducting further detailed tests such as an ultrasound or mammogram.
Liu recalled, "Back then, there was no internet, so it was hard to find information," and confessed, "I tried not to think too much about it, but I was scared."
She underwent surgery immediately, but only after the lump was removed did she learn that it was not cancer.
At the time, people around her advised her to seek another doctor's opinion, but Liu did not take that advice to heart.
Liu said, "I thought the doctor would know better, so it never occurred to me that I should double-check," and emphasized, "That experience taught me that I need to protect myself and speak up for myself."
She is now taking part in Pfizer Inc.'s "Every Breakthrough Matters" campaign, promoting the importance of cancer screening and early detection.
She noted, "What matters is not just the treatment itself, but truly understanding what screening is and having the right information," adding, "Many people delay checkups because they are busy or afraid, and their illness is found too late. By then, they end up feeling lost while trying to figure out what treatment options are available."
Liu explained that, based on her own experience, she finds it meaningful to help others take charge of their health. Speaking about her past misdiagnosis and surgery, she said, "Rather than regretting it, I try to find what I can learn from it," and stressed, "I try to accept the situation as it is and grow from it."
Liu is a Chinese American actor who gained worldwide recognition through films such as "Charlie's Angels" and "Kill Bill."
