The Financial News – Former Daejeon mayor Heo Tae-jeong has been selected as the Democratic Party of Korea's candidate for Daejeon mayor. Lawmaker Jang Chul-min, who advanced to the runoff with him, ultimately failed to secure the nomination.
So Byung-hoon, chair of the Central Party Election Management Committee, announced on the 13th at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, that Heo had defeated Jang in the Daejeon mayoral runoff vote. In accordance with the party constitution and rules, the vote percentages for each candidate were not disclosed.
Heo previously served as a presidential secretary in the Roh Moo-hyun administration and went on to become a two-term head of Yuseong District, Daejeon, before serving as mayor of Daejeon.
Heo is now set to face incumbent Daejeon mayor Lee Jang-woo, who had already secured the nomination from the People Power Party (PPP), in the general election.
