Financial News reported that while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel issued a statement condemning President Lee Jae Myung’s post, members of the local Korean community are expressing concern.
Lee Kang-geun, President of the Korean Association in Israel, wrote on his Facebook page on the 11th, "President Lee Jae Myung’s remarks have become a hot issue," and asked, "Did he ever think about the hostile looks that Koreans living in Israel will have to endure because of this one action?"
The previous day, President Lee shared on his X, formerly known as Twitter, a video raising allegations that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had tortured Palestinian children. He criticized it by saying, "There is no difference between the massacre of Jews in the Holocaust and killings committed during wartime."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel immediately responded. It stated, "On the eve of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, he made remarks that belittle the massacre of Jews," and added, "We strongly condemn this."
As tensions rose, Lee Kang-geun lamented, "The incident in question happened two years ago, so why post about it now?" and added, "This really makes things difficult for us."
In fact, the video in question is known to have been filmed in 2024.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (MOFA) also moved to contain the fallout from the controversy. Through X, MOFA stated, "We regret that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Israel misunderstood the intent of the President’s post, which expressed a belief in universal human rights rather than an opinion on a specific issue, and issued a rebuttal based on that misunderstanding."
