According to The Financial News, Artemis II, NASA’s crewed spacecraft for lunar exploration, has returned to Earth after completing its mission. In the process, bread was singled out as one of the worst foods you can eat on a spacecraft.
On April 15, the YouTube channel Understanding featured science communicator Hangseong, who said, "Bread is the worst food on a spacecraft," explaining, "because bread produces crumbs." Even a single bread crumb that gets into an unseen part of the spacecraft can cause electrical problems such as a short circuit. For this reason, tortillas are supplied as a substitute for bread on spacecraft. Tortillas serve a similar purpose to bread but do not produce crumbs.
Spacecraft crews also try to stock food that is both tasty and highly nutritious. As in airplanes, astronauts’ sense of smell and taste can become dulled, and if there are issues with their meals, the space mission itself can be disrupted. Food provided to astronauts is said to be on par with dishes awarded Three MICHELIN Stars.
For example, Nutella, which unexpectedly drew attention as a product placement (PPL) when it was seen floating around the cabin in the live Artemis II broadcast, fits the criteria for space food very well. It is high in calories and does not produce crumbs.
