[The Financial News] A Chinese man who sexually harassed a flight attendant on board was forced off a plane.
According to foreign media including the New York Post on the 10th (local time), security officers were dispatched on the 8th to a Malaysia Airlines flight that was preparing to take off at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) in Malaysia. The aircraft was scheduled to depart from Kuala Lumpur (KL) and fly to Beijing in China.
While passengers were seated and waiting for takeoff, a male passenger, believed to be a Chinese national, touched a flight attendant’s buttocks and tapped it several times. When the flight attendant strongly objected, the passenger reacted defiantly.
He shouted, saying, "I just touched you lightly," and then argued loudly, "How is this sexual harassment? Even in the Republic of Singapore this would not be considered sexual harassment."
He went on to make the absurd claim that "because relations between China and Malaysia are very good, this will not be a problem."
The crew eventually reported the incident to airport authorities, and airport security officers boarded the plane to remove the man. The process, however, was far from smooth.
In a video of the incident that someone recorded and uploaded to a social networking service (SNS), the man can be seen arguing with airport security for quite some time before finally standing up from his seat.
Because of the incident, the flight’s departure was delayed by more than an hour.
The New York Times (NYT) reported that "incidents of sexual harassment on planes are on the rise while passengers are confined in cramped spaces during boarding and takeoff."
