Two Firefighters Killed in Wando Blaze Brought Under Control in Three Hours

According to The Financial News, a fire that broke out at a cold storage warehouse in Wando County, South Jeolla Province, was fully extinguished in about three hours, but two firefighters were killed in the process of putting out the blaze.
Fire authorities said that at around 8:25 a.m. on the 12th, they received a report of a fire at a seafood processing company’s cold storage facility in Wondong-ri, Gunoe-myeon, Wando County, South Jeolla Province. Fire crews arrived on the scene six minutes after the call, at 8:31 a.m., and declared Level 1 response at 9:00 a.m. as they began full-scale firefighting operations.
The main flames were brought under control at 11:01 a.m., and the fire was completely extinguished at 11:23 a.m. The response level was lifted at 11:34 a.m.
Two firefighters, one from a rescue unit and one from a firefighting unit, were killed in the blaze. One factory official sustained minor injuries.
Based on statements from company officials that the fire started while using a torch during paint removal work inside the factory, fire authorities are investigating the exact cause of the blaze.
The commissioner of the National Fire Agency is also heading to the scene, and relevant authorities are examining the circumstances of the accident and whether safety regulations were followed.
