[The Financial News] Elon Musk, the chief executive officer of Tesla, Inc., has stirred up Korean online communities after sharing a Korean-language post on his X (social network), formerly known as Twitter, account.
The post appears to be a simple response to a Korean user who highly praised the technological achievements of X, but once the author's political background became known, it triggered heated debate in South Korea.
On the afternoon of the 9th, Musk reposted a message written by a Korean-speaking user. He did not add any text of his own, attaching only two rocket emojis.
The shared post contains an assessment of X's real-time translation feature.
The user wrote, "What is going on? I can't sleep right now," adding, "All of a sudden, posts from Japanese, English, and Spanish accounts are just showing up in Korean. This is a whole new world."
The user went on, "What is even more exciting is that once the whole world can communicate in real time like this, communist propaganda will no longer work. Elon, this is truly amazing."
After Musk reposted it, the message surpassed 34.2 million views in just one day.
Musk has long described X as humanity's "digital town square" and has stressed freedom of expression and the unrestricted spread of information. His repost is therefore seen as an expression of agreement with a statement that aligns with his management philosophy.
Riding on Musk's X account, the post spread rapidly and drew explosive attention, surpassing 18.5 million views within a day of being published.
The reaction in South Korea, however, was different. Opinions split along political lines, with both welcoming and concerned voices emerging.
The controversy centers on the author's X profile. The user’s profile includes phrases such as "YOON AGAIN (Yoon Again)," "I support the United States and Japan," "Opposed to socialism, totalitarianism, and communism," and "CCP out," referring to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
Online communities on the conservative side, in particular, reacted enthusiastically.
Sharing the content, users posted comments such as, "Even Elon Musk gave a shout-out to Yoon Again" and "Musk also went with 'CCP OUT, Yoon Again'," expressing their approval.
