According to The Financial News, concerns over energy supply are growing as the fallout from the Middle East crisis continues. In response, Naver and Kakao, two leading domestic information technology companies, are joining efforts to reduce energy consumption.
As of the 10th, the information technology industry reported that Naver and Kakao have launched company-wide campaigns to save energy and promote eco-friendly practices. These measures follow the government's "alert" level warning on the current resource security crisis.
Naver announced through an internal notice that it began the "Team Naver Eco Mode Campaign" the previous day. In addition to its existing eco-friendly initiatives, such as using renewable energy, turning off lights across the company, and encouraging reusable cups, Naver will expand practical energy-saving measures that both the company and employees can adopt in their daily routines.
Starting on the 13th, Naver will adjust operating hours for key facilities in its office building and broaden the range of its lighting control. The company will also move up lights-out times at the Connect Lounge, cafes, fitness center, and in-house clinic, while dimming lighting levels in shared areas, including workspaces.
In addition, Naver will shorten operating hours for media screens to cut nighttime power use. It will also move forward the schedule for keeping automatic doors in common areas open at all times, from June to the second week of April, to reduce unnecessary electricity consumption.
The company will strengthen resource-circulation activities to reduce waste generated in the office. On top of existing efforts such as recycling hand towels, collecting metal resources, and operating an AI-based recycling system, Naver will introduce a program to recycle coffee grounds using biodegradable plastic bags. To minimize standby power, employees are encouraged to switch off electronic devices, use public transportation for commuting, and participate in the five-day vehicle rotation system for parking lots.
Kakao is also rolling out voluntary measures that employees can choose to join, in active support of the government's policy to stabilize energy supply and demand.
Beginning on the 8th, the company implemented a five-day vehicle rotation system for parking lots and offers a 20% discount on monthly parking fees to employees who participate.
To improve energy efficiency, Kakao is adjusting lighting levels and operating methods in office areas and underground parking lots.
The company has also decided to turn off exterior wall lighting and media facades at its office building during nighttime hours.
