At about 1:58 p.m. on the 9th, a fire broke out on a Son Won-il-class submarine that was undergoing maintenance at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Dong District, Ulsan. A woman in her 60s, an employee of a partner company who had been working inside the vessel, has gone missing.
Fire authorities issued Level 1 response at 2:38 p.m., and the blaze was fully brought under control by 3:56 p.m.
The submarine involved in the fire is not a vessel under construction, but an existing, previously built Son Won-il-class conventional submarine.
Authorities believe the fire started during maintenance work carried out earlier in the day.
At the time of the fire, 47 people were working inside the submarine. Forty-six of them managed to evacuate, according to officials.
After fully extinguishing the fire, firefighters have been focusing their efforts on locating the missing woman in her 60s, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
