According to Financial News, Jung Chung-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), visited Daegu Metropolitan City on the 8th and praised former Prime Minister of South Korea Kim Boo-kyum, who is running for Mayor of Daegu. Jung said, "It is hard to find someone who combines such political weight, administrative experience, stability, competence, and humane character to lead Daegu’s change and leap forward."
At the on-site Supreme Council meeting in Daegu that day, Jung stated, "No matter how I looked at it, I have long believed that Kim Boo-kyum should run in Daegu. I wanted to make sure he became our candidate, even if it meant imploring him again and again to persuade him to run."
He continued, "Kim Boo-kyum is the DPK’s only surefire winning card in the Daegu election," adding, "In Daegu, young people are leaving their hometown, and small business owners are standing on the brink. We can no longer brush this aside by saying other regions are struggling just as much as we are."
Jung went on to say, "We now expect Kim Boo-kyum to cast a bright ray of hope over Daegu."
He also remarked, "Because the People Power Party (PPP) has kept changing its stance, the administrative integration of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province has come to a halt, but that is a path we must take," and added, "Together with Kim Boo-kyum, the DPK will join forces to ensure that the administrative integration of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province is achieved."
Former Prime Minister of South Korea Kim Boo-kyum, who took part in the Supreme Council meeting, welcomed the party leadership, saying, "I understand that the candidates running in Daegu Metropolitan City who are here with me today, and the party leadership, have come with the intention and determination for the party to listen directly to the frustrations of Daegu citizens and take responsibility for their urgent reality."
Kim Boo-kyum said, "The citizens of Daegu have endured and held on for far too long," and asked, "What kind of future can there be in a place where young people leave for other regions in search of jobs?"
He went on, "The real strength of the Mayor of Daegu begins with restoring Daegu as a sustainable city," stressing, "The mayor’s goal should not be to turn Daegu into a city that barely survives by securing a bit more support from the Government of South Korea. Daegu must become a city that can take responsibility for its own future."
Kim Boo-kyum added, "Daegu has been at a standstill for so long that it now needs priming water," and explained, "Only by persuading the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea and the Government of South Korea to secure budget and policy support, using that as a foundation to innovate industry and create jobs, and infusing universities with a spirit of innovation, can we transform Daegu into a city that grows on its own."
To this end, Kim Boo-kyum announced that he would pursue a policy vision that includes creating a bio-medical cluster, building Daegu into a robot capital city based on artificial intelligence (AI), and turning it into a leading city in the future mobility industry.
