Lawmakers from the opposition Democratic Party in the United States of America (U.S.) argued that "President Donald John Trump, who threatened to 'destroy civilization' in the Islamic Republic of Iran (Iran), must be removed from office." Trump had earlier raised the pressure ahead of a negotiation deadline he set for Iran (8 p.m. on the 7th, Eastern Time in the U.S., 9 a.m. on the 8th, Korea time), declaring that "an entire civilization could disappear tonight and never return."
According to Cable News Network (CNN) and other U.S. media on the 7th (local time), several Democratic Party lawmakers called for invoking the Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution immediately after Trump's "destroy civilization" remarks. The Twenty-fifth Amendment to the United States Constitution allows the Vice President of the United States and a majority of the Cabinet to suspend the president's powers if they judge that the president is unfit to perform his duties.
The lawmakers voiced concern over how far Trump might escalate the conflict, warning that "threatening to strike civilian infrastructure such as power plants constitutes a war crime."
