[Financial News] A private ambulance in Wonju, Gangwon Province, crashed into a passenger car and then veered onto the sidewalk, killing a middle school student who was walking there.
According to police and Gangwon Fire Headquarters on the 7th, the collision between the private ambulance and the passenger car occurred at around 4:53 p.m. the previous day at the intersection in front of the courthouse in Musil-dong in Wonju, Gangwon Province.
The impact sent the private ambulance careening onto the sidewalk, where it struck a teenage boy identified only by the initial A. He went into cardiac arrest and was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while being transported to a nearby university hospital, but he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the passenger car, a 65-year-old identified only by the initial B, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The private ambulance driver, a 27-year-old identified only by the initial C, and a 25-year-old passenger identified only by the initial D reportedly sustained minor injuries.
Investigators found that there was no patient on board the ambulance at the time of the crash. Police believe the private ambulance ran a red light while speeding, and that the passenger car entered the intersection on a flashing signal without sufficient caution, leading to the collision.
Both drivers tested negative for alcohol. Police are analyzing dashcam footage and nearby closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings to determine the exact cause of the accident.
