[Financial News] Pastor Jeon Kwang-hoon, who was indicted and detained as the alleged instigator behind the disturbance at the Seoul Western District Court, has been granted release on bail.
According to the legal community on the 7th, the Seoul Western District Court approved bail for Jeon, who has been charged with offenses including obstruction of general traffic.
The court stated that it decided to grant bail after considering Jeon’s health condition, the low risk of flight, and the fact that a travel ban can effectively prevent him from fleeing abroad. It also noted that some of the charges are in dispute, making it necessary to ensure his right to a proper defense.
Jeon is reported to require medical treatment four to six times a day for a urological condition related to diabetes and has a history of undergoing stent procedures for angina. He also suffers from walking difficulties due to aftereffects of cervical spine surgery, and he recently received oxygen therapy at the detention center after experiencing shortness of breath.
The court set several conditions for his release, including payment of a 100 million won security deposit, restriction of his residence to his home address, and a ban on contact with individuals related to the case. In particular, it prohibited any direct or indirect contact with persons involved in the alleged incitement until their witness examinations are completed.
Jeon is accused of encouraging supporters to storm the Seoul Western District Court, damage property, and assault police officers in the early hours of January 19 last year, shortly after the arrest of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. Prosecutors believe that Jeon incited the disturbance by telling Sarang Jeil Church congregants and participants in rallies at Gwanghwamun that they should "eliminate anti-state forces through the people’s right of resistance."
At his first trial hearing on February 27, Jeon denied the charges and applied for bail, citing deteriorating health.
The next hearing in Jeon’s case is scheduled for the 17th.
